Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam, observed by millions of people worldwide, including in Türkiye, where it holds a special place in the hearts of many. It is a time of fasting, self-reflection, and community, where Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset, focusing on spiritual growth, gratitude, and acts of charity. The day-long fast is broken each evening at iftar, a meal shared with family, friends, and neighbors — an experience that embodies the spirit of unity and generosity. A Special Turkish Iftar Experience At our iftar, we will start the evening at 7:00 PM, sharing insights into the significance of Ramadan and its traditions. Once the sun sets at 7:30 PM, we will break the fast together with a carefully prepared selection of Turkish dishes, just as they would be enjoyed in homes across Türkiye. What to Expect
The cost is $60 per person, which includes the food, drinks, and fellowship. If you have dietary restrictions, please specify when buying tickets. The last day to buy tickets is Saturday, March 22, 2025 so that we can give a final count to the restaurant. NO WALK-INS ACCEPTED. Please note that ticket sales are non-refundable but may be transferred to another attendee. If you have questions regarding this event, please contact Ozan Yasavur. This is a special event of the Rotary Club of San Francisco, open to all Rotarians, visiting Rotarians, prospective members, and guests. Parking: Street parking is available but hard to find. The nearest paid parking garage is the Japantown Fillmore St Annex Garage located at 1650 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA 94115. After the screening, Dr. Stellie Kim, a member of our Club who grew up in Korea, will lead a discussion on Korean literature and history, reflecting on the impact of Yun Dongju’s work. We will also enjoy a selection of traditional Korean dishes, immersing ourselves further into Korean culture. This 110-minute film is not rated, but not recommended for young children due to its mature themes of oppression, political tension, and a tragic storyline based on the life of a real poet during a difficult historical period in Korea. The film will be shown in Korean with English subtitles. This event is sponsored by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committees of the Rotary Club of San Francisco and of District 5150. Sign up now! Space is limited and registration is available through March 27. The ticket price of $30 includes the film, snacks, wine and non-alcoholic beverages, plus dinner and discussion after the film. Parking: There is no charge to park on Sundays in the garage located across from Rotary Terrace. Street parking is available free of charge on Sundays. Do not park in the Rotary Terrace garage, as it is exclusively reserved for residents. Laubscher earned a master's degree from the Columbia School of Journalism and received a Pulitzer Fellowship. Upon graduation, he used the fellowship to spend a year traveling and reporting from different locations around the world. In 1977, he returned to San Francisco to report for KRON-TV. In 1978, Laubscher was one of the first reporters on the scene at the Moscone–Milk assassinations. His coverage of the event earned an Emmy award. He also covered the Jonestown massacre the same year. In 1981, Laubscher left reporting and transitioned to a public relations career as an executive with the Bechtel Group. After 18 years with the Bechtel Group, he left to found his own communications company, Messagesmith. In 1982, The City was planning to retire its surface streetcars in favor of new SFMTA trains and buses. Laubscher, a fourth-generation San Franciscan, was chair of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce’s transportation committee. He organized a streetcar festival as a visitor’s attraction. The historic trolley festival he launched with then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein the next summer was so popular that it ran for five summers, and its service was later made permanent. Rick is the founding Board Chair of The City Club of San Francisco, a business-social organization located in the historic Stock Exchange Tower. He currently serves as Board Chair of Union Square Foundation, supporting Union Square Alliance with arts, music, and safety activities.

Blue Bear School of Music is the original school of rock and roll. It was founded as “Blue Bear Waltzes School of Genuine Music” in the summer of 1971. For over 50 years, Blue Bear has provided music education to the community and has an active outreach program to underserved neighborhoods that provides free music education to kids at over 20 sites in San Francisco. All ages, from tykes to seniors, participate in classes, individual instruction, and band workshops. In 1978 operations moved from the original storefront on Ocean Avenue to Fort Mason Center, where Blue Bear has thrived and evolved to its current state of more than 850 music-loving students per quarter.
In today’s program, Steve Savage will introduce the school, and then, we will be treated to a performance by talented students and staff.

The Seder is a meal that starts with the retelling of the story of how the Jews were liberated from slavery in ancient Egypt and a reminder of our obligation to build a better world or all (in other words, Service Above Self). The menu will feature foods traditionally enjoyed by Jewish families at Passover Seders, including gefilte fish, matzo ball soup, braised beef brisket, roast chicken, matzo kugel, vegetables, wine and non-alcoholic beverages, and dessert. While there will be options for those who avoid gluten, we cannot offer a vegetarian or vegan option. Dress is business casual. Our hostess keeps a strictly Kosher home, fully adhering to all of the dietary rules followed by observant, including special rules for the eight-day Passover holiday (from sundown April 12 until sundown on April 20 in 2025). Because space is very limited, this event is open only to Club members. No guests. More information, including the location, will be provided when you register. The cost of this event is $45 per person. Click on the button to register and pay. The deadline to register is April 11, 2025. |

Apr. 16, 2025 2:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Event is limited to 10 people. Register now to save your spot. Parking is available on the street. Volunteers are encouraged to wear Rotary-branded attire that can get dirty, as well as layers to be prepared for multiple weather conditions. Dinners will be served outside on the Family House patio. Family House serves as a home away from home for families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses by providing physical comfort and emotional support, free from financial concerns. Founded in 1981, Family House is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization providing temporary housing to families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children’s Hospital. Qualifying families live more than 50 miles from UCSF, and many live at or below the low-income status as determined by UCSF. Family House sustains nearly a 100% occupancy rate and can accommodate 250 people per night. Over the course of a year, Family House serves more than 4,000 families. Year Round Toy Drive (Optional): To make an extra special impact, each volunteer is requested to bring an unwrapped toy. Toys are given out all year round through Fozzy’s Toy Room – where every time a family checks in with a patient and/or sibling, they get to pick out a toy. This will be an ongoing need as Family House currently goes through 85 toys per week!
