From birth, Holly James had to fight to live. Not only was Holly born with Down syndrome, but she was also born with heart disease. Holly's mother, Dixie James, joins us today to share her journey and challenges in raising Holly from birth to adulthood and from dependence to being able to live independently.

Dixie James is a retired Special Education teacher, having taught for Marin County Office of Education for 25 years. She has a Master’s degree in Exceptional Student Education, motivated by giving birth to her daughter, Holly. Dixie coached Special Olympics for 12 years as well as health and fitness classes for adults with special needs; she also composed an album of educational songs, titled The Singing Calendar that was a top seller for 25 years.

Dixie's favorite phrase is LIFE IS MOVEMENT and practices this phrase daily, working out at Fitness SF, open water swimming, tap dancing, race walking, English Horse Riding, yoga, piano and weight training, which qualified her for TEAM USA in 2007, to compete in Greece, becoming an international champion in her age division in Ms. Physique and Ms. Sport Model.

Join the Rotary Club of San Francisco for a meaningful evening of service and fellowship with Family House, one of our grant partners.

The Rotary Club of San Francisco will sponsor a catered dinner for the Family House community. Volunteers will help support the evening, participate in a cleaning project, and spend time with Family House families and staff.

Family House staff will be on site to provide support throughout the event. The evening will serve approximately 70 people and will take place at Family House.

All volunteers are asked to complete the Family House pre-registration form before arriving on site. This will help make the sign-in process faster and easier.

Volunteers are encouraged to wear Rotary-branded attire that can get dirty. Please dress comfortably and wear layers, as conditions may vary.

Event is limited to 10 people. Parking is available on the street. 

Optional Fellowship After the Project
After the project, volunteers are invited to continue the evening with a non-hosted fellowship gathering at Spark Social, located across the street from Family House. The optional fellowship will be held from approximately 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. All food and beverages will be at each volunteer’s own expense.

Optional Toy Drive
Family House also welcomes toy donations for Fozzy’s Toy Room. Each time a family checks in with a patient or sibling, they are invited to select a toy. Family House currently distributes approximately 85 toys each week, so donations are greatly appreciated. Volunteers are encouraged, but not required, to bring a new toy.

About Family House
Founded in 1981, Family House serves as a home away from home for families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses who are receiving treatment at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.

Family House provides free, temporary housing, physical comfort, and emotional support so families can remain close to their child during treatment without the added burden of local lodging costs. Families may stay for a few days or for more than a year, depending on the length of their child’s care.

Family House is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and can accommodate up to 250 people per night. Over the course of a year, Family House serves more than 4,000 families.

Families are referred by UCSF pediatric social workers and must live at least 50 miles from San Francisco. Many of the families served by Family House qualify as low-income under California Medi-Cal standards.

What to Expect: We'll kick things off with a brief welcome for ~30 minutes as people settle in and then a quick overview of what Rotary is and what our Club does. From there, we'll spend the bulk of our time together connecting through a fun, easy activity designed to help you meet current members as well as fellow prospective members exploring the Club alongside you. We'll wrap up with some time to reconnect and chat before heading out.

Club Projects: Vice President of Community Service Yana Sharma will be at this event to lead a micro-volunteer project and showcase some of our Club's projects.

Please note: our room reservation ends promptly at 7:00 PM. 

Light food and refreshments will be provided. Parking is available. Uber or public transportation are also good options.

Del Seymour shares his journey as an African American Vietnam veteran who was chronically homeless and incarcerated for 18 years to his recovery and founding of Code Tenderloin in 2015.

Moving to the Tenderloin in his mid-40s, Del spiraled down into drug addiction. At age 62, he got clean thanks to the help of San Francisco native Walter Hughes, a financial consultant and an elder at the San Francisco Christian Center in the Tenderloin. Hughes ran across Del while doing outreach at a neighborhood park, gave Del a suit and a business card, and invited him to church that Sunday. Del went that Sunday and Hughes got him a place to live in the Tenderloin. The church paid his rent until he could get housing through the Veterans Administration. To get off drugs, Del chose a model of recovery at Glide,

In Del’s last days of homelessness and substance abuse, he drove a cab. “I enjoyed being a tour guide and earned big tips.” One day, he got three parking tickets. “That killed my insurance, so I started thinking what I could do that would be like telling people about the city but without a car?” That’s when he got the idea for Tenderloin Walking Tours.

Because Del had lived in Tenderloin for almost two decades, he knew the neighborhood inside and out. He knew all the hotel workers, service people, restaurant and store owners. “I love San Francisco history.” He took to going to the library everyday to read the archives. Del created Walking Tours from nothing and nine years later, it’s still in business. “I tell people how the Tenderloin played a part in the LGBTQ movement, in the legendary jazz scene and as a theater locale.” He started with a 90-minute tour and has since added the TenderNob Pub Crawl, which is mentioned in “Lonely Planet,” as well as group tours for schools, nonprofits, and tech companies. 

As Del was conducting his tours and meeting more and more people, locals described him as “the brother that brought white folks into the neighborhood.” He used that platform as entrée into the tech world. “The tech companies weren’t integrating with the neighborhood as far as job development, recruitment, and placement and so I challenged them.”

Del founded Code Tenderloin in 2015. Code Tenderloin prepares participants to succeed in the workplace with a curriculum that covers technical skills, soft skills such as learning the culture of the workplace, interview preparation, resumé creation, one-on-one mentorship, and off-site programs led by some of the best tech companies in the Bay Area. Today, Code Tenderloin is funded by the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development, with additional funding from foundations and tech companies such as Dolby, Twitter, and Microsoft. LinkedIn, Uber, and Salesforce provide classroom space and teaching instruction. 

Del has been on the coordinating board for the city’s Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing since 2014, a volunteer position that takes him back and forth to Washington, D.C. – expenses paid by the city – to work with mayors to mitigate homelessness. Nicknamed “Mayor of the Tenderloin” for his contributions, Del acted in former SF Mayor Lee’s stead when he visited the White House in November 2016 with 35 mayors from around the country, to discuss how to help homeless veterans. Del met Michelle Obama. “We’re both ‘Southies’ from Chicago.”

This September, our DEI Film Festival is recognizing Healthy Aging Month by featuring On Golden Pond.

Beautifully filmed at a lake in New Hampshire, On Golden Pond explores the challenges and joys of multi-generational relationships within a family, featuring Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda (as an aging father and adult daughter who have long had a difficult relationship), and Katharine Hepburn (the wife and mother). Things get interesting when the daughter introduces her new boyfriend to her parents … and the boyfriend’s young son.

Released in 1981, this film won many awards including Oscars for Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and more. It is rated PG.

We’re experimenting with a new format for this film, asking that you view it on your own and then participate in a Zoom discussion at 8 PM on Wednesday, September 23. We invite you to spend a morning exploring one of San Francisco's most treasured spiritual communities and discovering practices that have supported people around the world for centuries.

Join fellow Rotary members and friends for a unique morning of reflection, learning, and fellowship at the San Francisco Zen Center. Whether you are simply curious about Zen Buddhism or interested in exploring mindfulness, compassion, and contemplative practice, this introductory program offers a welcoming and accessible experience for everyone.

No previous experience with meditation or Buddhism is necessary. Everyone is welcome.

PROGRAM

9:30 a.m. – Welcome and Introduction

• Meet your hosts for a brief introduction to Zen Buddhism, its traditions, terminology, and the role of a Dharma Talk.
• Learn what to expect during your visit.
• Enjoy a guided tour of the facility.

10:00 a.m. – Dharma Talk
Experience a traditional Dharma Talk presented by one of the San Francisco Zen Center's teachers, exploring themes of mindfulness, compassion, and living with greater awareness.

11:15 a.m. – Tea and Cookies
Join in a brief interlude with tea and cookies in the Welcome Center, explore the bookstore, and connect with others.

11:25 a.m. – Questions and Answers
An opportunity to engage in conversation with the Speaker and ask questions about Zen practice and the day's presentation.

12 Noon – Community Lunch and Fellowship
Enjoy a simple vegetarian meal while sharing conversation with practitioners and fellow Rotary members and friends. This is an opportunity to experience the spirit of sangha—the Buddhist community—and the warmth of shared fellowship.

• Shoes are to be removed in the hallway before entering the meditation hall, but not in the dining area or the welcome center. 
• No hats in the meditation hall or meditation room.
• Face masks are appropriate for people if they feel that being in close proximity to others may be an issue. 
• Cell phones are to be silenced.

This special program has been developed with the assistance of Carla Walter, a former Rotarian and member of the San Francisco Zen Center community. We are grateful for her guidance in creating this opportunity for Rotary members.

Parking and Transportation: The Zen Center does not have an on-site public parking lot, so utilizing transit or carpooling is strongly encouraged. If you must drive, your options include:

• Street Parking: Limited metered and unmetered parallel street parking is available along Page Street and surrounding blocks. Finding a spot can be difficult during peak hours, and you must read posted street signs carefully to avoid ticketing or street cleaning sweeps.
• Public Parking Garages: Paid parking lots are located nearby if street spaces are full. The closest public options are situated on Franklin Street near Oak Street as well as a small local lot located closer at 350 Page Street. 
• Accessible Parking: The center has accessible parking spaces designated close to the building for visitors with limited mobility.

It is recommended that you contact Mary three days before (by October 21) to confirm that you will be attending so that she can expect you on October 24. 

Please wear your Rotary Club of San Francisco yellow colored vest to easily identify yourself as a member of our Club or any Rotary gear you have. If you do not have our yellow vest, let Mary know. Also, bring sun protection such as sunblock, sunglasses, or hat, and wear comfortable walking shoes. A one-mile route option and a three-mile route option are available.

• 280 West Freeway from King Street is 3 traffic lights or 3 blocks away once you exit King Street.
