Projects - Rotary Peace Fellow

The Rotary Peace Fellows Program represents an important opportunity for Rotarians in District 5150. The Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution offer to individuals committed to peace and cooperation the opportunity to pursue a master's-level degree in international studies, peace studies, and conflict resolution. In addition to providing advanced educational opportunities for potential future world and community leaders, the Rotary World Centers advance research, teaching, publication, and knowledge on issues of peace, conflict and its resolution, and world understanding.

We are a special district in that we (along with four other nearby districts) support the program located within our district, at UC Berkeley. The way that Rotary supports this program is by providing host counselors and participating in a spring seminar Sunday, April 29, 2007, at the Berkeley City Club. As well, we are a peace-builder district, in that we contribute funding, along with many other districts, to this worldwide program.

The Rotary World Peace and Conflict Resolution Program centers are located at six sites in the world, associated with seven university partners:

  • Duke University and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA (both universities jointly host one Rotary Center)
  • International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan
  • Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • University of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England
  • University of California, Berkeley
  • The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

The partnership that Rotary has formed with these universities is unique. The program allows Rotary to make a connection with peace and conflict studies and also to continue to build worldwide talent and promote greater tolerance, cooperation among peoples, and world understanding and peace.

To learn more about the qualifications, graduates of the program, or the centers, and to obtain the full application, please go to Rotary's website (www.rotary.org). Feel free to contact the program chair, Roger Steiner, for more information at 415-332-8811, at the San Francisco #2 Club every Tuesday lunch, or via email: rogsteiner@aol.com.
